Of all issues that need to be emphasized, it is without an iota of doubt, that the need for a critical analysis of the Nigerian education system is top amongst all. It is very saddening to understand that whenever a discussion is raised on our system of education, the dominant topics are often strongly related to negative virtues: examination malpractice, corruption, and poor facilities, decline in educational standard and so on. Education is not just the best legacy anyone can give. It is also a basic right of any individual citizen. To ensure that this right is given to each individual, everyone becomes a stakeholder in its actualisation- starting from the government, to the schools, teachers, then the parents and down to the students themselves. We are all tasked with the responsibility of helping in our different ways in painting a more beautiful picture of education in Nigeria. However, have we been meeting up with this task? Definitely not. It is then crucial to identify those problems associated with our educational system and devise several remedial ways.
Education starts at home. This stems from the little communication between parents and children to their proper relationship- verbal, physical and overall training. These constitute the foundation of education of any child. It is thus, very important to trace the plant down to its root when discussing its growth. Parenting entails caring, protecting, guiding and proper enlightening of wards. Many parents however do not consider these their duties. Some parents even encourage their wards to get involved in examination malpractice by personally sponsoring a “backdoor” for them during exams.
Parents are to create a strong bond between them and their children. Understand how each day goes for them and do not wait till Open-day before you check their notes. How many parents even go to Open-days? If we really wish for our educational image to appear more beautiful, we have to look into proper parenting. Several forms of discussions should be set up to advise and implore our parents to help nurture these leaders of tomorrow. If they help mould their children into great individuals, they also would grow into parents who would mould another set of great generation.
Several companies and empowerment industries complain that our graduates are unemployable and the reasons are not farfetched. Aside the family factor which is a key cause, our educational structure as a whole is substandard. Consider the public schools for example. Several researches carried out by examination bodies to investigate the poor performances of our students often point at the fact that the syllabus are in most cases, never covered. “This is the first time we are getting involved in an activity like this”, this is a comment we get from many of our public school students in any competition or quiz. It is very important to understand that if a student is deprived of the necessary activities and stipulated curriculum that he/she should partake in, it is most likely to have a huge effect on not only his/her overall ability in exams but also his/her ability to apply the knowledge acquired in real life situations. Our universities also encounter constant strikes, constantly disturbing academic calendars. What then is the way forward? Yes, it is our right that the government make provision of these things. But would we continue to wait for them even when we are at the losing ends? Let’s empower ourselves and develop our future by ourselves. Private organisations and NGOs can join the struggle. Individuals can come together too or individually come up with ways by which these deficiencies can be remedied. Organize free tutorials, come up with tutorship programmes, sponsorships, mentorship and many more. The government will however not be left behind. They have to fully and effectively fulfil their own duties and so should we.
Furthermore, the prospects of education in Nigeria are key notes which should be held in high esteem. We are hoping to achieve solid education; one which spread spontaneously and exponentially. Education that would help us acknowledge our state and fight towards getting better. Education that would help us fight illiteracy, corruption, ignorance, poverty and all social vices. Getting a better government should also be our aim. With genuine democracy, the right to education would be respected. Deserved rights to the educational sector would be provided and everything would seem to move more smoothly.
It is however important to always remember that it not right for us to just identify problems. It is necessary to also identify the solutions to them. And we should be ready to put in our best to moving forward. For success is not an individual achievement, it is a result of collective dedication.
