INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION SENSITIZATION WALK AND TAOHEED SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL OUTREACH

The morning of the 24th day of January, 2019, which marked the 1st United Nations’ International Day of Education, greeted the Taoheed Community, Basin, Ilorin, Kwara State, with an awareness walk. Yattiyr Scholarship Initiative (YSI) began her sensitization with an awareness walk at Taoheed Junction. A cry for “Right to Quality Education” was proclaimed loudly and clearly to all passersby, shop owners, motorists, and the residents in general. A few members of the public along the street were also interviewed to air their opinions on the Nigerian education system.

PRACTICAL FRAMEWORK TO ACHIEVING ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Academic excellence is the demonstrated ability to perform, achieve, and/ or excel in scholastic activities. It is usually connoted with attaining high grades and distinguished superior performance among peers. However, academic excellence goes beyond just making good grades. It is the totality in the development of an individual’s intellectual capacities and skills in service to humanity. Schools will be most successful in their mission of educational provision towards academic success when they integrate efforts to promote student’s academic, social and emotional learning processes. Academic excellence can greatly influence the future and eventual career choice of an individual, hence its sensitivity. Poor academic performance causes children and adolescents to feel pessimistic and disappointed about their future and leads teachers and parents to exert pressure, which negatively influences the subjective well-being of children and adolescents.

2019 NEW YEAR UPDATE

The past year, 2018 (4th April) marked the inception and inauguration of Yattiyr Scholarship Initiative; a non-profit organisation with a vision to increase access to basic quality education for indigent children (particularly Kwara state) through advocacy, sponsorship and mentorship. And over the past eight months, we have been able to kick-start and accelerate the pace of achieving our objectives. From eight foundational members, the organisation progressively has 42 members spread across seven departments now. In 2018,the organisation embarked on two main projects- the Gaa Ayekale ‘Back to School’ Project and the Kwara Brain Point Challenge 1.0; and outreaches to- Oke Ose Community Secondary School, Lower Niger River Basin Secondary School and Oke Aluko Community Secondary School. We also awarded scholarships (16 students) and donated books we acquired from a book drive trend to students and schools, respectively. Notably, all our activities in the past year were funded through internally generated fund (from members and volunteers), voluntary donations from the public and partnerships.
