2022 JAMB CUT – OFF, IS THIS THE NEW NORMAL?

What is the norm and what is not in this deviant society of ours?

With the decision taken by Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) to adopt a new minimum cut- off for admissions into tertiary institutions, it is a reflection of the quality of what is delivered in our educational sector. Would we say this decision was made in the best interests of the students?
JAMB recorded less than 25% of registered candidates scoring average and above in the last examination woeful enough to warrant a reduction in the cut off mark just to fill the institutions and reduce the number of candidates for the coming year. A proof of the poor quality of education in the country, a taint in the image of the teachers and a slap on the face of Government.
Looking at the decision, is it actually the best way out? Does it profer a solution to the problem at hand? We wonder. It might be preferential for students scoring below the average but it does not solve the long lasting detriment in the quality of education and quantity of students.
The way to get started is to quit talking and start doing. The educational sector needs a revival with reviews of curricula inculcating skill and empowerment classes, career guides and practicalising the abstract knowledge being taught in classes. The students also need to be rehabilitated as the average student have been made to believe education is not necessary in living the best life but there is need to let them know the knowledge helps make the best decisions in life.
Education is the most powerful weapon one can use to change the world. A nation like our needs more of bright minds taking the reins to help reinstate its glory. We don’t want a shortchanged glory, do we? Hence the need for the Government, Non- governmental organizations, Organizations like Yattiyr scholarship Initiative, Educational foundations to help forge this weapon and make the above changes come true.
