The second in-house training for members of the Yattiyr Scholarship Initiative was held on the 16th of March, 2019 at the Laureate Academy, Tanke, Ilorin. The training was on “Becoming a Productive Mentor”. The Guest Facilitator, Mr. Michael Enitan-a conference speaker, creative writer, an entrepreneur and the founder, Heroes of Tomorrow foundation, coached the team on -“Mentorship: Doing it Right”.
Mr. Michael started his talk by encouraging members to have a healthy self-esteem as everyone on earth has a divine purpose and no one is unimportant or a mere product of pleasure. He therefore threw a challenge that we all rise to the point where people look up to us as we also have benefitted/are benefitting from people’s ideas, leadership, etc. He went on to define leadership after getting three opinions from the house. He said leadership is the ability to influence others. He asked for people’s experiences in relation to this; and responses followed. Some of the highlights from his introduction are:
– We all have what it takes to influence people
– No one is inferior, you will always be better than someone in an area.
– Knowing your niche is the secret to success.
He went on to explain why leadership is influence. As a leader, you help people discover themselves. To this, he said that the best discovery in life is self-discovery. Helping others develop and believe in themselves is also self-empowerment.
In relating leadership to mentorship, Mr. Michael said leaders become great not because they are powerful but because they empower other people. Before you can empower anyone, you have to be led also; be committed to learning.
Mr. Michael created 4 scenarios and the gathering was divided into 4 groups to deliberate on solutions.
A-Someone at the point of committing suicide
B- Someone in serious debt
C- A student planning to drop out of school
D- A couple on the verge of divorce
The groups deliberated for 2minutes and came up with logical responses.
The conclusion was that we make people see reasons to do what is right and not attempt to impose anything on them.
Mr. Enitan also shared tips steps on how to be a successful leader/ mentor. He mentioned that the first step to achieving this, is self-investment. This entails:
-Know what you want/have a vision
-Set a daily agenda
-Pursue what you want
-See the light in yourself
He concluded by saying we all should lead more than a good life and have a dream bigger than ourselves.
